“I want to get my life together” can be an honest starting point. It is also a difficult instruction to follow on a busy Tuesday.

A useful goal gives you something you can recognize and act on. Before choosing a new routine, take a moment to describe where you are and what you want to be different.

Describe today without judging it

Write down what a normal week actually looks like. Include your work, responsibilities, the time you have to yourself, and the plans you keep postponing. The point is to see your starting conditions clearly.

Try three short sentences: “Right now, I spend my time on…”, “I want more room for…”, and “The thing that gets in the way most often is…”. Specific answers give you something to work with.

Choose one direction

Which change would matter to you even if nobody else noticed? It might be keeping an appointment with yourself, learning a new skill, or bringing more intention to your week. Choose the direction you are willing to make room for.

Give the next step a place

Replace “I’ll start soon” with a time, a place, and an action. For example: “On Sunday evening, I’ll spend 15 minutes looking at my calendar and choosing two times for myself.” This is a planning example; your next step should fit your own circumstances.

Bring better questions to the conversation

If you are exploring coaching, bring your starting point with you. What have you tried? What do you want help thinking through? Which constraints should a coach understand? A clear brief makes it easier to ask whether an offer is right for you.

Find your next step.
